YALE-BROWN OBSESSIVE COMPULSIVE SCALE (Y-BOCS)
This online screening is not a diagnostic tool. Only trained mental health professionals (who use Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, (DSM-5-TR) as a guideline for diagnosing OCD, can help you determine the next best steps for you.
Welcome to the world of the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale (Y-BOCS) OCD test, a widely recognized and standardized assessment tool designed to evaluate the severity of symptoms associated with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD).
The Y-BOCS OCD test serves as a valuable resource for clinicians, researchers, and individuals seeking to better understand the nature and extent of their OCD symptoms in their daily life.
Through a comprehensive set of questions and rating scales, the Y-BOCS OCD test provides a systematic way to assess the frequency, intensity, and interference caused by obsessions (unwanted thoughts) and compulsions (repetitive behaviors).
By taking this OCD test, you gain valuable insights into the specific areas of your life that are affected by OCD (including anxiety disorder), helping you and your healthcare provider to develop an appropriate treatment plan.
Remember that the Y-BOCS test is just one part of the diagnostic process in treating OCD, and its results should be interpreted in conjunction with a thorough clinical assessment just like any other mental health disorders.
Embrace the opportunity to engage with the Y-BOCS test and take a step towards gaining a deeper understanding of your ritualistic behavior, obsessive thoughts and mental health condition in general.
What Is Y-BOCS?
The Yale Brown Obsessive-Compulsive Scale is regarded as the “gold standard” in the measurement of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptom severity and treatment response.
The Y-BOCS OCD test is extremely useful in determining the type & severity of symptoms such as intrusive thoughts, ritualized behaviors, significant distress and unpleasant thoughts to diagnose OCD.
It is a semi-structured online OCD test that consists of 10 core items, 5 measuring time, interference, distress, resistance and control of obsessions (unwanted thoughts) (items: 1–5), and 5 identical items measuring compulsions (compulsive behaviors) (items: 6–10).
The items are rated from 0 (no symptoms) to 4 (severe symptoms), and yield a global severity score (range 0–40).
Use the results to help decide if you need to see a mental health professional to further discuss proper diagnosis and OCD treatment (obsessive-compulsive disorder).
Y-BOCS OCD Curriculum
If you have both obsessions and compulsions, and your overall score is:
- 0-7 = Subclinical OCD Symptoms
- 8-15 = Mild OCD Symptoms
- 16-23 = Moderate OCD Symptoms
- 24-31 = Severe OCD Symptoms
- 32-40 = Extreme OCD Symptoms
No single test is completely accurate. You should always consult your physician when making decisions about your health for a complete process to treat OCD.
